2nd Phase of mass distribution of Vitamin A Supplementation with De-worming (VAS+D) and Multivitamins

ASEED in partnership with Vitamin Angels U.S. carried out a mass distribution of vitamins in some 12 selected communities across the North West region which include Fundong, Belo, Njinikom and Konene all in Boyo Division; Oku in Bui division, Bafut in Mezam, Buabua, Wum in Menchum, Bambalang and Babessi respectively in Ngoketunjia Division.

Particularly the activity consisted of distributing Vitamin A 100000 iu to children age between 6 to 11 months, Vitamin A 200000 iu to children age 12 to 59 months and multivitamins to pregnant/lactating women. The mass distribution started on July 4th 2016 at Fundong Health district, with a team from ASEED (supervised by Dr. Ngam Confidence – President/Coordinator, Kukwah Conscience – Staff and Mr. Ngamala Oumarou Kanjo – Board Member) who provided Vitamin A Supplementation and De-worming alongside multivitamins to pregnant/lactating women. 

Vitamin Donation

The beneficiaries during the mass distribution in Boyo division (Fundong, Belo, Njinikom, Anyuajua, Aduk and Konene subdivisions) went as follows: 

  • 1100 capsules of 100,000 IU vitamin A for children 6-11 months (enough for 1100 children)
  • 5000 capsules of 200,000 IU vitamin A for children 12-59 months (enough for 5000 children)
  • 5000 tablets of albendazole 400 mg for children 12-59 months (enough for 5000 children)
  • 140 bottles of multivitamins for pregnant or lactating women with 180 tablets per bottle (25200 doses, enough for 140 women)

The 2nd day kicked off on July 5th 2016 and targeted Oku, Bambalang and Babessi health areas. The population who benefitted involved;

For Oku health area

  • 200 capsules of 100,000 IU vitamin A for children 6-11 months (enough for 200 children)
  • 2 bottles (1000 capsules) of 200,000 IU vitamin A for children 12-59 months (enough for 1000 children)
  • 2 bottles (1000 tablets) of albendazole 400 mg for children 12-59 months (enough for 1000 children)
  • 30 bottles of multivitamins for pregnant or lactating women with 180 tablets per bottle (5400 doses, enough for 30 women)

For Bambalang health center

  • 100 capsules of 100,000 IU vitamin A for children 6-11 months (enough for 100 children)
  • 500 capsules of 200,000 IU vitamin A for children 12-59 months (enough for 500 children)
  • 500 tablets of albendazole 400 mg for children 12-59 months (enough for 500 children)
  • 20 bottles of multivitamins for pregnant or lactating women with 180 tablets per bottle (3600 doses, enough for 20 women)

For Babessi center

  • 100 capsules of 100,000 IU vitamin A for children 6-11 months (enough for 100 children)
  • 500 capsules of 200,000 IU vitamin A for children 12-59 months (enough for 500 children)
  • 500 tablets of albendazole 400 mg for children 12-59 months (enough for 500 children)
  • 20 bottles of multivitamins for pregnant or lactating women with 180 tablets per bottle (3600 doses, enough for 20 women)

Consulative Meeging

Also some health workers and community volunteers were trained by ASEED on how to administer the vitamins to the various age group targets and to become good health service providers for VAS+D during the 2nd supplementation round. The distribution continued to Bafut  where by ASEED worked hand in hand with Nchum Women Anti- AIDS & Poverty Alleviation Group – Bafut and some 500 children age 6 to 11 months benefitted from the 100,000 IU Vitamin A, 1000 children age 12 to 59 months equally benefitted from VAS+D alongside some pregnant/lactating women.

This activity was also carried out in Buabua and Wum in the days ahead, targeting some 2000 children and pregnant/lactating women. In general the distribution benefitted a total of 10,000 children and more than 300 women from these 12 subdivisions of North West Region and the health personnel and community volunteers were also trained on VAS+D method.
